The Andes Plane Crash
After the Andes plane crash, It was very difficult for passengers to survive. Many died because of the impact of the crash, injuries, or starvation.
"They then had to turn west toward the mountains and then fly through Planchon, which was a low pass. Afterward they were to cross the mountains and exit the mountains south of Curico, where they would turn northward and fly to Santiago. The pass of Planchon was covered in clouds and the headwind had slowed the plane. The pilots were relying on time needed to cross through this pass and had not taken into account how much the plane was slowed down by the headwinds. The pilots radioed for clearance to descend into Santiago, but the descent was much too soon, for they had not yet passed through the mountains. The ultimate crash occurred in a very controlled flight right into the side of an unnamed mountain," (Fun Trivia). The horrible plane crash into the Ande's was caused because of human error. Guessing where the location of the plane was didn't work and caused many lives to be taken away.
"They tried to survive with the scarce food reserves they had until being rescued, but they lost their hope when heard that the search had ceased on the radio .Desperate owing to the lack of food and physically exhausted, they were forced to feed themselves on their death partners to keep on living," (Viven). While many humans with plentiful food think there starving because they forgot to eat breakfast, it doesn't even come close to the starvation of that the Andes plane crash survivors had to face.
"Eating the dead was the only way he and 15 others stayed alive after a plane crash left them stranded for 72 days on a frozen mountainside in Argentina. The corpses of the victims - many of whom died on impact - stayed frozen in the snow and were slowly picked apart by the survivors, who huddled for warmth in the wrecked fuselage," (Apline Expeditions). These survivors had to resort to cannibalism to barely survive the bitter, harsh conditions that they faced. As seen in the first picture, Parrado was drinking water from an invention made that consisted of melting snow into empty wine bottles from metal from the inside of the plane.
